Avec 1km, chaque membre du collectif a photographié son quotidien dans un rayon d’un kilomètre autour de son domicile.De Montréal jusqu’au Nouveau-Brunswick, nous avons choisi de tourner nos objectifs vers l’ordinaire : rues, parcs, voisins, paysages familiers, détails du quotidien.Résultat : 9 zines, 9 regards, 9 fragments d’intime et d’ordinaire — une mosaïque sensible qui révèle la richesse de nos espaces familiers et questionne notre rapport au territoire, à l’appartenance et au regard.Parce que documenter le banal, c’est aussi raconter notre époque.

With 1km, each member of the collective photographed their daily life within a one-kilometer radius of their home. 
From Montreal to New Brunswick, we chose to turn our lenses toward the ordinary: streets, parks, neighbors, familiar landscapes, and everyday details.
The result: 9 zines, 9 perspectives, 9 fragments of the intimate and the everyday — a sensitive mosaic that reveals the richness of our familiar spaces and questions our relationship to place, belonging, and perspective.
Because documenting the banal also means telling the story of our time.

La nuit est un poème


Ce livre est la première publication du collectif Hors d’État. Partant de l’envie de créer un projet commun malgré la distance et les quotidiens qui nous éloignent, c’est ici que la nuit choisit de nous rallier. Nos regards se croisent, les pensées se mêlent, doucement nous ficelons ensemble nos sensibilités nocturnes, pour en faire émerger une histoire commune.

Les zèbres


Le projet Les zèbres, ce sont des capsules audiophotographiques sur l'histoire et l'identité de personnes ayant été adoptées. Elles sont nées outre-mer, mais ont grandi en terre québécoise. (2010 - 2011)

Vie Saisonnière

Au cœur de la Montérégie, plusieurs milliers de travailleurs d’Amérique latine transforment chaque été le paysage rural du Québec. Le temps d’une saison, ils quittent leur famille et leur pays pour venir produire nos légumes. Vie saisonnière propose une immersion dans la réalité peu connue de ces hommes. Seasonal Life
Every year, in the Montérégie region, thousands of Latin-American migrant workers participate in the harvest and packaging of vegetables, transforming the traditional image of rural Québec. The web-documentary Seasonal Life provides an immersion into the daily lives of these workers – a reality not so well known outside of the feilds. (2015)This project was done in collaboration with Rodolphe Beaulieu-Poulin and Sophie Guérin. The five episodes documentary is available online here.&#38;nbsp;

Saint-Jean-de-Cherbourg&#38;nbsp;

En circulant aux abords des villages de La Matanie, j'ai fait halte à Saint-Jean-de-Cherbourg. Mon besoin d'explorer m'a incitée à dresser un portrait général de cette communauté qui, dans les années 70, a été menacée de disparaître. Afin de donner de l'importance à ses habitants, je suis allée de porte en porte, sensible à leur générosité et à leur ouverture d'esprit.2017-2018 ©&#38;nbsp;Photographies par Kassandra Reynolds

My need to explore motivated me to make a general portrait of the community. Ma rencontre avec Bernice &#38;nbsp;

Ce projet documentaire souligne la solitude d’une dame qui a quitté Montréal il y a une vingtaine d’années pour s’installer en bordure du fleuve Saint-Laurent, dans le petit village de Saint-Ulric. La vie de Bernice n’est pas toujours facile. Ses enfants maintenant adultes sont à l’extérieur, elle ne possède pas d’automobile, elle ne travaille pas et par conséquent ses déplacements sont limités. Je pense que mon travail va bien au-delà de la représentation photographique, car un lien s’est créé entre nous. Il y a eu apaisement d’une solitude et ce fut pour moi une source d’inspiration. 	My Meeting With Bernice&#38;nbsp;

This documentary focuses on the solitude of a lady who left Montreal twenty years ago to settle down in the small village of Saint-Ulric, on the edge of the Saint-Lawrence river. Her children, now adults, live elsewhere. She doesn’t have a car and she doesn’t work, so she rarely leaves the house. I think that my work goes beyond photographic representation, because there was real connection between us. Some solitude was alleviated, and that was an inspiration for me. This brought new colors to our lives.

Domaine de La Florida

À plus de 2500 km de la Floride, est situé un camping un peu particulier : Camping Domaine de La Florida à St-Ambroise, dans la région du Saguenay au Canada. Administré et conçu par l’entreprise jouxtant le camping, le détaillant de motorisé Le Géant Motorisé, ce camping est depuis quelques années en pleine expansion. Son caractère unique ? La volonté d’offrir à ses utilisateurs la sensation d’être en Floride avec entre autres un décor fait de faux palmiers, des noms de rues exotiques et des loisirs rappelant ceux que les touristes québécois, les « Snowbirds&#38;nbsp;», pratiquent en Floride l’hiver. 


Cette série photographique est un regard sur la mode, sur les habitudes de vie d’une génération qui, à la retraite, redéfiniront la notion de vacances, de plaisir, de communauté. Sur un terrain qui prend de plus en plus d’expansion avec les avantages et les inconvénients que cela amène pour les résidents de la petite et paisible communauté de St-Ambroise, plus de 700 petites parcelles sont aménagées. Une véritable nouvelle ville ou ghetto est entrain de se former à l’intérieur d’une autre. 


La promiscuité des campeurs nous semble difficile à apprécier, mais pourtant c’est une des qualités que les usagers trouvent à leur camping. La propreté, la nouveauté, la promiscuité, l’imitation d’un paradis américain sont autant de facteurs qui rendent ce site si attirant pour de multiples retraités ou futurs retraités enraciner dans des habitudes de vie&#38;nbsp; nord-américaine. Un peu las de l’individualisme qu’ils vivent dans leur ville dortoir, les résidents retrouve le côté humaniste et simpliste que le camping leur offre sans prétention.


Évidemment, cette microsociété détonne dans le paysage nordique de la province du Québec. Les palmiers côtoient&#38;nbsp; les peupliers et les bouleaux. L’aménagement des petits terrains ne suit aucun code esthétique que l’on retrouve dans l’aménagement des terrains dans les villes. Il est composé de multiples sculptures, fleurs, fontaines et lumières réparties avec soins sur les terrains. Il est assez surprenant de voir l’effort mis sur ces parcelles par les résidents, la fierté que cela démontre envers leur environnement construit, reflète un désir de plaire et de rencontrer les gens de la communauté.


Observer ces photographies c’est réfléchir sur les enjeux des loisirs de masse, de leur environnement&#38;nbsp; où ils sont pratiqués et des motivations des gens qui les pratiquent. Des questions par rapport au sentiment d’appartenance, d’inclusion/exclusion face à notre territoire surgit également. Comme une sorte de déportation volontaire de la part de ces gens qui choisissent de quitter leur terre natale quelques mois par année et de chercher un mode de vie à l’américaine.

Domaine de La Florida


2500km north of Florida, is a camp ground that is quite peculiar: Camping Domaine de la Florida, in St-Ambroise, located in the Saguenay region in Canada.&#38;nbsp; Created and administered by the neighbouring RV retailer, Le Géant Motorisé, this camp ground has willingness to offer the feeling of being in Florida with, amongst other things, a faux Palm tree decor, exotic street names and activities that would be practiced by the « Snowbirds&#38;nbsp;» (the Québec tourists) in Florida during the winter months.


This series of photographs will give you a look into a way of life and the habits of a generation, whom are, or will soon be, retire; will redefine the notion of pleasure, vacations, and community. On the grounds that are continuing to grow, with all the advantages and inconveniences this gives the residents of the small and peaceful village of St-Ambroise, there are 700 plots of land laid out. A whole new town or Ghetto is forming within the other.


The lack of privacy that camping brings is hard for us to appreciate, yet this is one of the qualities that the campers love about the place.&#38;nbsp; The cleanliness, the novelty, lack of privacy and imitation of an American paradise are all factors that make this site so alluring for multiple retirees and future retirees with well rooted habits of a North American life style.&#38;nbsp; Tired of the sleep individualistic life style in their home towns, the residents find a more humanistic and simplistic style of living that the camp ground offers them without pretense. 


Obviously, this micro society clashes with the Nordic landscape found in the province of Québec; the palms mixed with the poplars and the birches. The landscaping of the little lots do not follow conventional esthetic codes that are found in urban areas. They are comprised of multiple sculptures, flowers, fountains and lights laid out with care.&#38;nbsp; It is quite surprising to see all the effort that is put in by the residents, the pride that is shown


Looking at these photographs is to reflect on the risk on the mass social activities, their environment and the motivation of the people who participate in them.2014-2018 © Photographer : Sebastien Michaud

Forest Gardeners part 1


La forêt boréale, représente le plus grand écosystème forestier de la planète. Les compagnies
forestières au Saguenay comme partout au Québec (Canada) doivent participer au reboisement
de cette forêt puisqu’elles en récoltent les arbres depuis plusieurs années. Elles œuvrent aux
efforts de reboisement de la plus importante région forestière du Québec. La forêt est composé
en majorité (85%) d’épinettes noires, essences très recherchées pour ses qualités de
résistance autant pour le bois d’œuvre dans la construction que pour la fabrication de pâte et
papier à partir de copeaux.

						
Pour la première partie de cette série à long terme sur la vie de l’arbre et la croissance des
forêts, le reportage se penche sur les travailleurs qui oeuvrent dans les pépinières.

						
Le travail est exigeant, de longues heures sont passées à l’extérieur beau temps mauvais
temps. Les femmes, pour la plupart venant de la région et depuis plusieurs années à l’emploi de
la pépinière, se glissent dans de petits espaces pour travailler. Elles doivent avec concentration,
contrôler et décider de la vie des petites pousses qui deviendront sous leur supervision des
arbres à en devenir. Minutie, rigueur et discernement, sont les qualités requises pour ce travail.
Les hommes oeuvrent quant à eux à la mise en place et à la livraison des plants. Ces hommes
et ces femmes font parti des jardiniers de la forêts.

						
Mon intention est de rendre hommage à la forêt et à ceux qui s’en occupe. Certainement que la
gestion de la forêt québécoise vit des problématiques. Mon angle d’approche démontre s’en les
pointer explicitement certaines d’entre elles. Mêlant des images plus poétiques à d’autres plus
descriptives, j’ai voulu montrer la beauté d’un travail vital pour le bien de la planète. Et n’oublions pas la beauté des hommes et des femmes aux horizons différents avec chacun leurs
raisons de revenir années après années replonger dans ces forêts que l’on jardine dans l’espoir
que les générations futures puissent, elles aussi, pouvoir en récolter les arbres. Ces travailleurs et travailleuses sont ainsi des « Jardiniers de la forêt ».

Forest Gardeners part 1


The boreal forest is the largest forest ecosystem on the planet. Three nurseries located in Saguenay specialize in the growth of tree species that will be used for the reforestation of the most important forest region in Québec. &#38;nbsp;


The volume of softwood from the forest is mostly composed of black spruce (85%), a tree essence that is highly sought-after for its qualities of resistance not only for lumber, intended for construction, but also for pulp and paper production from shavings. 


For the first part of this long-term series on tree life and forest growth, the photo report focuses on the workers inside these nurseries. 


The work is demanding and long hours are spent outside, regardless of the weather. Women, for the most part from the region and employed for several years in the nurseries, need to slip into small spaces to work. With concentration, they must control the little sprouts and decide which ones will live to become trees under their supervision. Thoroughness, rigor and judgment&#38;nbsp; are required qualities for this work which, in our time, is vital for the good of our planet. Men, as far as they’re concerned, ensure the set up and the delivery of the seedlings. 


These men and women are part of forest gardeners.

Sweet Home


						En parcourant la route 132, j’ai pris le temps d’explorer ce vaste territoire et d’aller à la rencontre des personnes qui l’habitent. Cette route qui longe le fleuve St-Laurent, est parfois habitée, parfois en pause le temps de l’hiver. &#38;nbsp; Pourtant, les gens qui y vivent m’ont accueillie à bras ouverts et m’ont laissée le sentiment que quelque chose de fort les habitaient. Un parcours de vie, une histoire, un ancrage au territoire. Chacun bâtissant, à leur façon, un chez-soi, un Sweet home. En osant le porte-à-porte, je voulais me laisser porter par les rencontres humaines. Maintenant, lorsque je reprends la route, je peux mettre des visages et des rencontres, sur certaines maisons. Ma propre vision du territoire se transforme et j’ai ainsi l’impression de mieux l’habiter. D’un autre côté, plus j’en découvre, plus celui-ci me semble immense. Par cette série à long terme, je cherche à documenter la relation de l’homme avec le fleuve et comment il habite , ou coexiste, avec celui-ci.&#38;nbsp; Et comment le tout prend sens.

Resiliencia


						La série Resiliencia met en lumière la force des personnes qui travaillent dans l’économie informelle et la ‘’petite économie’’. Sensible à leur réalité, j’ai été à leur rencontre au Pérou, à Ayacucho : vendeurs ambulants, chauffeuse de tuk-tuk, artisanEs, mère au foyer, membres de petites entreprises familiales…Tous et toutes des entrepreneurEs.

Ces travailleurs et travailleuses sont à risque de précarité économique, tant par les salaires variables et parfois insuffisants, que par le manque de protection sociale. Au-delà de cette précarité, j’y ai découvert des personnes fortes, solidaires et persévérantes. Elles m’ont partagé leur passion pour les negocios (affaires), leurs doutes et leurs rêves. 

 Resiliencia, c’est la fierté du vendeur ambulant pour la qualité de son produit,

C’est la femme qui cumule plusieurs rôles, sans être suffisamment rémunérées,

C’est l’artisan pour qui la tradition vaut plus que l’industrie de masse,

C’est la force de la solidarité familiale face à la précarité de l’emploi,

Resiliencia, c’est Dolores, Gregorio, Carmen, Bertha et tous les autres qui m’ont accueilli.

 Ces femmes et ces hommes font face aux conséquences d’un système inégalitaire et qui, malgré tout, font preuve de dignité.

Et de résilience au quotidien.
